Description

Trovador is a rhythm and narrative adventure game for PC and Mac, set in the Spain of the 16th century. You play a musician from the near future who, after an accident, wakes up in the Castilian Golden Age with the only thing he still owns: a futuristic four-string guitar that works as a portable DAW. To find his way home he must do what trovadores have always done — listen, compose, perform. Gather the verses of real traditional romances from the people around you, build each song stem by stem, and bring a broken oral tradition back to life.

A musician from the near future wakes up in 16th-century Castile after an accident. All he has left is his instrument: a futuristic four-string guitar that works as a portable DAW, with melody, bass, rhythm and harmony at his fingertips. In a world of inns, muleteers and candlelight, his way forward is the oldest trade of all — that of the trovador.

The game is built on a three-phase loop that mirrors how oral tradition really works. In Descubrir (Discover) you explore a historical setting from an isometric view and collect the verses of a real romance by talking to the people who remember it. In Recrear (Compose) — the rhythm core of the game — you build the song stem by stem: your left hand plucks four strings on A·S·D·F while the arrow keys choose which voice sounds at every moment, with interchangeable instruments for each layer. In Transmitir (Perform), the composed romance comes to life in a narrative performance that weaves together music, verse and action, with the player driving the performance.

The songs are real: romances from the Castilian romancero, arranged for the game and implemented as adaptive FMOD music that grows as you play. Wrapped in hand-drawn 2D art that crosses Spanish Golden Age imagery with neon, Trovador turns the oldest form of Spanish popular poetry into something you don't just hear — you discover it, you recreate it, you transmit it.

The three phases

The heart of Trovador is a loop of three phases that embodies oral transmission itself. Every romance in the game passes through all three.

Descubrir · Discover

Exploration phase

Explore a 16th-century Castilian inn from an isometric perspective and gather the verses of a romance from its people. At the Mesón del Olivo, every conversation with muleteers and regulars adds a stanza, a clue or a nuance to your notebook: the story reveals itself by listening.

Recrear · Compose

Composition phase

The rhythm core of the game: you don't replay the music, you compose it by playing it. Your left hand plucks four strings (A·S·D·F); with the right, the arrow keys choose which voice sounds at every moment — melody, bass, rhythm or harmony. Each layer accepts different instruments, swappable like gear in an RPG, so the romance ends up sounding your way.

Transmitir · Perform

Performance phase

The composed romance comes to life: music, text and action in a single performance. As you play, an illustrated scroll unfolds and stages the story while the lyrics advance beneath a staff. What you discovered and recreated is passed on — the romance sounds again, now told by you.

Key features

  • An original three-phase loop — Discover, Compose, Perform — that turns oral transmission itself into gameplay.
  • Compose, don't just hit notes: build each song's accompaniment stem by stem, choosing which instrument plays melody, bass, rhythm and harmony.
  • Real songs from the Castilian romancero, arranged for the game rather than pastiched.
  • A futuristic four-string guitar that works as a portable DAW: the bridge between the near future and the 16th century.
  • Hand-drawn 2D art that blends Spanish Golden Age imagery with a neon edge.
  • Adaptive FMOD music that grows richer as you build each song.
  • A story about how songs survive: someone listens, someone remakes them, someone passes them on.
  • An original score by Granada musician Toni Jiménez (Niños Mutantes, Lori Meyers, Nievla), recorded at Producciones Peligrosas.

Why the romancero?

For centuries the romances survived from voice to voice; over the last hundred years that oral chain has all but broken. Trovador hands these songs to a digital-native audience not as museum pieces but as a lived experience — you find them, you rebuild them, you pass them on. The space where the old romancero meets electronic music is essentially unclaimed territory.

Music & audio

All of Trovador's music — the original score and the arrangements of the romances alike — is the work of Toni Jiménez, a Granada musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist trained in classical guitar at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música Victoria Eugenia. He was Niños Mutantes' keyboardist from 2019 until the band's farewell in 2024 and has been Lori Meyers' guitarist since 2020. He has led Nievla since 2018, co-founded Madame Popova in 2014 with his sister Ana Jiménez and Andrés Galán, and plays guitar in Unidad y Armonía. He has worked as a musician, arranger and producer on numerous recordings for projects across Spain.

Andrés Galán joins as performer and arranger. A Granada musician, he graduated in classical guitar performance from the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música Victoria Eugenia and in Music History and Sciences from the Universidad de Granada. He works across the Granada music scene as a guitarist in bands such as Nievla and D. Latorre, and as bassist for Paulina del Carmen and Unidad y Armonía.

Recording and mixing of the music are handled by Nacho López at Producciones Peligrosas. A pianist with a professional music diploma and a higher degree in sound, he plays keyboards in Nievla and El Hombre Garabato, with whom he has worked alongside national figures such as Miguel Ríos.

The game will also be voiced by professional actors, recorded at that same studio. Their production, editing and mixing are handled by EHProducciones, a Granada audiovisual company whose specialities include sound post-production, and with whom Nacho López also works.

Producciones Peligrosas is one of Andalusia's most storied rooms: working out of Peligros, on the edge of Granada, since 1989, it was the first studio in Spain designed by British acoustician Philip Newell, and records by Enrique Morente, Lagartija Nick, 091, Los Planetas, Lori Meyers, Miguel Ríos and Vicente Amigo have been made there.
